Making Espresso Without A Machine

Bialetti Moka ExpressThe Bialetti two-part cast aluminum espresso pot has long set the standard for stove top espresso makers. With the invention of the Bialetti in the 1930s, espresso—long a staple of Italian cafés and bars—became available for home consumption. Today, this classic of twentieth-century industrial design can be found in 90 percent of Italian homes. Now Italy’s favorite pot can go to work in your kitchen, making delicious espresso on gas or electric stove tops.

To purchase a Bialetti espresso pot or to check out other way to make espresso at home go to our home brewing systems section in our online store.

Step 1: Unscrew the bottom chamber from the top half the your Bialetti and fill to the interior line with cold water.

Step 2: Place the basket in the bottom chamber and fill, but do not pack, with finely ground coffee. 9 bar espresso recommends any one of our four espresso roasts ground fresh. Replace the top half of the pot and screw on tightly.

Step 3: Place your Bialetti on your stovetop and bring to a boil. As the cold water in the lower chamber heats, the pressure from its boiling forces the water up through the coffee grounds. In just a few minutes, espresso enters the upper chamber, filling it with perfectly brewed coffee, as the pot hisses and gurgles.

Step 4: Carefully check (remember this is boiling liquid!) to see that the top of the Bialetti is full of coffee. If so remove the pot from the heat and let it stand until the lower chamber is releasing only steam.

WARNING: There is a pressure safety valve on the bottom chamber but as with any item on a stovetop do not leave your Bialetti unattended.
